What is Y.E.S. 2 kNow?
YES2kNOW, is a provincial, RCMP lead initiative, that stands for Youth Engagement Summit 2 Knowledge Now. In the program, conferences are held for students in grades 7-12 to discuss making positive and healthy lifestyle choices. YES2kNOW is part of the RCMP Community Prevention Education Continuum (CPEC). YES2kNOW is developed in communities by dedicated RCMP Strategic Prevention Service (SPS) Coordinators across the province. SPS Coordinators mobilize leaders in their community to be engaged and organize YES2kNOW. It is the mission of the RCMP to engage youth in making healthy choices and leading a positive lifestyle and enable them to say "Yes to Knowledge Now!"
Community Prevention Education Continuum
C.P.E.C. stands for Community Prevention Education Continuum. It is the platform from which coordinated prevention programs and activities are undertaken by the RCMP and its community partners. C.P.E.C. is designed to fit and mobilize a community to address and prevent community youth issues. It adopts the old adage of
It takes a whole community to raise a child and puts it into practice.
The Summits are held across British Columbia for youth in Grades 7-12, depending on the community. They include: Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Duncan, Castelgar, Terrace, Merritt, Cranbrook, Richmond, and Salt Spring Island as well as their surrounding areas.
The content of each Youth Engagement Summit is guided by the needs and desires of the local community. Conference themes include but are not restricted to: social media, healthy relationships, radicalization, drugs, social belonging, gangs and crime, healthy choices, connections, conflict resolution, economics and jobs, bullying, mental health and cyberbullying.
YES2kNOW has already experienced great success in the communities of Cranbrook and Trail in 2015. Following the YES2kNOW pilot projects in both of these communities a province wide initiative has been established.
